This is an evening food walk through central Athens. We start at Syntagma Square and make six tasting stops over about 2.5 hours. It is a short look at what people here eat at night, not a full dinner, though you will definitely not leave hungry.

What You Taste on the Athens Street Food Tour

The first stop is a small bakery. You get a kourou cheese pie, still warm, flaky, full of cheese, the kind Athenians grab on the go all day. Then regional cheeses and cured meats, with a few minutes on how the dairy is made and who makes it. After that a family-run pastry shop for baklava and other phyllo sweets, heavy with syrup. Then a specialty store for honey, extra virgin olive oil, halva and roasted nuts, the things that sit in every Greek pantry.

Near the end come loukoumades, fried to order and handed to you hot, crisp outside, soaked in honey and cinnamon. We finish with a souvlaki wrap: grilled meat, warm pita, and the toppings that go with it. By the last stop you have eaten your way across a few streets of the city, the way people who live here do.

Searching for an Alternative?

This is the shorter version of our Athens Evening Food Tour. It leaves out the mastiha shot, the Greek yogurt dessert, and the sit-down meze and wine at a taverna. It runs about 2.5 hours instead of the full 3.5. It works well as a first evening in Athens, when you want to get your bearings and eat well, or as a shorter option on a fuller trip.
