This time of the year, the smell of Christmas baking comes out of every Greek house, reminding us that Christmas time approaching very soon!

Ingredients:

For the cookies:

  • 400gr orange juice
  • 530gr sunflower oil
  • 50gr butter melted
  • 30gr icing sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/5 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 orange, only the pill
  • 1200 gr flour for all purpose
  • 500gr walnuts

For the syrup:

  • 500gr water
  • 700gr sugar
  • 1 orange cut in 2 pieces
  • 2 cinnamon pieces
  • 100 gr honey

Method:

For the syrup:

  1. For the syrup Boil all of the ingredients for the syrup, apart from the honey, until the sugar melts.
  2. Remove from heat. Add the honey and mix till combined.
  3. Let the syrup cool for 3-4 hours. It must be cold by the time the cookies come out from the oven.
  4. You can prepare the syrup from the day before.

For the cookies:

  1. For the cookies Preheat the oven to 190* C (370*F) set to fan.
  2. To make the cookies, you need to prepare 2 separate mixtures.
  3. For the first mixture, add all of the ingredients to a large bowl.
  4. Mix, using a hand whisk. In a separate bowl, add all of the ingredients for the second mixture.
  5. Combine the first and second mixture.
  6. Mix by hand, very gently, and for a very short time (10 seconds at the most).
  7. If you mix longer the mixture will split or curdle.
  8. Mold cookie dough into oval shapes, 3-4 cm in length, 30 g each.
  9. Try to keep them as similar as possible.
  10. Bake for about 20-25 minutes, until they are crunchy and golden brown.
  11. As soon as you remove them from the oven, soak the hot cookies in the syrup for 10 seconds.
  12. Allow them to drain on a wire rack.
  13. Drizzle with honey and chopped walnuts.
